Project details:
This project provided me with an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a different area of interior design—specifically, translating my ideas from pen and paper into a working prototype model.
The goal of the project was to design a relevant and consciously created piece of furniture or soft furnishing that aligned with the narrative we had established in our other projects. We were tasked with bringing our ideas to life using the university's workshops. Our grades were based on our design planning, the narrative behind our concepts, our hands-on work throughout the process, and the quality of the final piece.
My concept centred on modular family living and sustainability. I aimed to create a movable wall that could serve as a room divider while also offering practical solutions for entertaining children and providing storage for parents. For instance, one side of the wall could feature a small detachable table and storage for colouring pens, while the opposite side could provide a work surface, storage for utensils, and detachable shelves for adults. I chose to use raw materials such as recycled plywood and MDF, and I opted for dowels instead of screws to maintain a natural wooden aesthetic.
Results
The project was a great success and I was able to complete the prototype of my modular wall. It has the desired look and affect I wanted and the bracket design I created worked smoothly and without fault. I enjoyed bringing my narrative to life.
